Flagstaff has had its wettest fall on record, with almost a month still to go

2.6 billiongallons of water that entered Lower Lake Mary in the weekend storm

Weekend storms sent that much water into the lake as heavy rain flooded much of Arizona.

If it felt like the rain wouldn't quit, you're right. Four back-to-back storm systems hit Arizona, and meteorologists at the National Weather Service in Flagstaff say that made this the wettest fall in Flagstaff's history, with a little less than a month of the season left. A weather service meteorologist says the ground was already saturated by three previous storms, which made the flooding more intense.

The water has receded in Flagstaff, but the weekend took a toll. KJZZ reports two people were found dead in Flagstaff after the flooding.

The storms hit seven counties and five tribes

  • Statewide emergency from Gov. Katie Hobbs: Monday, Nov. 2

Looking toward winter, forecasters say a strong El Niño could boost Flagstaff's snowfall and bring more flooding risks. Meteorologist Jeff Masters of Yale Climate Connections put it this way: "We've had super El Niños in the past, but this is a super duper El Niño."

Roads

SR 89A through Oak Creek Canyon remains closed with no reopening time

If you drive between Sedona and Flagstaff, plan a different route. State Route 89A has been closed since Sunday between the Owenby Way roundabout in Sedona and Flagstaff, and the Arizona Department of Transportation has no estimated time for reopening. Use State Route 179 and Interstate 17 instead.

Oak Creek flooding also cut off neighborhoods. AZ Family reports more than 30 people spent three nights cut off near Thompson Bridge before neighbors cleared debris and reinforced the crossing. Deputies have delivered food to stranded residents and visitors, and say they can evacuate anyone who needs emergency medical care.

Reservoirs

The rains helped, but not enough: Lake Powell gained 12 feet in two weeks after the storms and still sits at approximately 25% capacity, according to Sarah Porter of ASU's Kyl Center for Water Policy. KJZZ reports the storms barely made a dent in the region's water supply crisis. Nolie Templeton, who monitors Colorado River reservoirs for the Central Arizona Project, said, "Very happy to have more water in the system." azfamily.comKJZZ
