COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Arizona Community Foundation of Flagstaff distributed $1.7 million in grant funding at an event that brought together local donors, nonprofit leaders, and community members to honor organizations serving Flagstaff. The gathering celebrated past work and set plans for future support.  Arizona Daily Sun

EDUCATION NEWS

  • An astronomer from Lowell Observatory led a study that measured the properties of a binary star system for the first time—providing new data on star behavior.  Arizona Daily Sun

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A survey team from the NPS reported that more than half of the 145,000 acres burned by the Dragon Bravo Fire has soil with low burn severity — making forest recovery easier. The team said recovery will begin next spring and funding will be needed for forest restoration in areas with moderate and high burn severity.  AZ Family
  • Kaibab National Forest reopened the Bill Williams Mountain watershed on August 27 and reduced fire restrictions to Stage 2 after the area had been closed under Stage 3 since June 18. The U.S. Forest Service said Stage 2 restrictions will remain through Labor Day—forest managers will re-evaluate conditions next week as improved weather and rain reduced fire risks.  KAFF

SPORTS NEWS

  • Tomorrow at 7 p.m., the Flagstaff Eagles will play their season opener against the Marcos de Niza Padres at the J. Lawrence Walkup Skydome. Coach Mickey Clements leads the team as senior quarterback Chase Brown, who broke many school records, as they aim to improve on last season’s best 6-4 record—building on recent gains.  KAFF
  • On Tuesday, the NPA girls soccer team won 5 to 0 over Blue Ridge at Peaks View County Park as Bethany Blair scored four goals and improved the season record to 2 to 0.  Arizona Daily Sun
