CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Coconino County officers arrested Jesus Velazquez Bojorquez on Aug. 10 after a traffic stop on Highway 89 near Mile Post 424 led to the seizure of over 29 pounds of meth, and he now faces charges for transporting dangerous drugs. KAFF
- ➤ A deputy with the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office stopped a vehicle at night and got permission to search the car—he discovered 29.88 pounds of methamphetamine. Arizona Daily Sun
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ On Aug. 1, The Hive hosted Ozzy Tribute Night (a tribute to a heavy metal pioneer) featuring three local bands who paid homage to his influential music. The event highlighted local talent and celebrated a lasting legacy in heavy metal. Arizona Daily Sun
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Firefighters are battling the three-acre Woods Fire near Sedona on Horse Mesa east of the Village of Oak Creek—smoke from the blaze is visible on I-17 and in nearby communities. Officials have not released a map of the fire and the public is advised to steer clear for safety. KAFF
- ➤ The Dragon Bravo Fire started on July 4 on the Grand Canyon’s North Rim from a lightning strike and has burned 144,432 acres with 44% containment as 1,125 firefighters work to control it. The fire destroyed over 70 structures including the Grand Canyon Lodge and led to park closures while Governor Hobbs called for an investigation—aircraft are now dropping water as high winds and rough terrain challenge efforts.
