ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • At 3:19 p.m. today, Summit FD, Flagstaff Fire, and CCSO responded to a kitchen fire on the 6000 block of Pinon Ave where burnt food was reported by Summit Engine 31—updates are forthcoming.  Flagscanner

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Bearizona Wildlife Park in Williams rescued two orphaned black bear cubs—one is Hogan (named for a wrestling icon) and the other is Ozzy (named for a rock singer)—and placed them in quarantine to ensure they are healthy before moving them to drive-through habitats that mimic the wild.  KAFF
  • Wildfire and flood risks threaten the Upper Rio de Flag watershed near Flagstaff with potential economic costs near $3 billion, so local agencies teamed up to restore the forest. Contractors were hired to thin trees and clear areas, including the 2,045-acre Hoch Project, with work to finish within the next 12 months — a proactive step to reduce the danger.  KAFF

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The state has invested in a new training facility in Flagstaff to boost wildland fire response capacity. The facility will serve as a regional hub for firefighter qualification and recertification—and will house the FFD’s Wildland Fire Management division.  Arizona Daily Sun
  • Six years after the Museum Fire scarred local neighborhoods and led to severe flooding that damaged homes, Flagstaff leaders have urged state representatives to oppose federal cuts to disaster preparedness and forest restoration programs—residents and local doctors recalled lasting impacts on both property and personal well-being.  AZ Family
  • The Arizona Department of Transportation, City of Flagstaff and contractors are working on two Cedar Avenue projects, with traffic at Monte Vista Drive/Main Street and Fourth Street set to open by Monday, August 4—pedestrians must use detours until sidewalk and roundabout improvements are finished. The Fourth-Lockett roundabout project will add flashing pedestrian crossing beacons and a crosswalk while remaining concrete, electrical and landscaping work is scheduled for Fall.  City of Flagstaff
  • Coconino County is updating its Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan to reduce disaster risks and help the community better prepare and recover—this collaborative effort includes Flagstaff, Fredonia, Williams, Tusayan, Page, and Northern Arizona University. Local residents, business owners, and organizations can share their input through an online survey and expect more opportunities for involvement as the process moves forward.  KAFF

HEALTH NEWS

  • The FDA has issued an urgent recall on frozen raw half-shell oysters and pear slices due to potential health risks—oysters from Korea were linked to a norovirus outbreak reported on July 16 and pear slices from New York may contain elevated levels of lead and cadmium. Restaurants, retailers, and consumers in affected areas are advised to follow safety guidelines to dispose of or return these products.  KAFF
