  • Flagstaff CARE program will add a downtown ambassador who will walk the center linking visitors to social services, non-emergency behavioral health and substance use response, and directions—helping people access local aid quickly.  Arizona Daily Sun

  • ATL Wings Flagstaff is closing its location at 1300 S. Milton as more businesses leave the area— the company said it does not plan to move to a new space.  Arizona Daily Sun
  • Arizona Snowbowl now offers a VR ski simulator that lets visitors ski year-round—Angie Grubb said it works like real skiing and activates the same muscles on the slopes—adding to summer attractions like tubing, scenic gondola rides, and a rooftop putt putt course coming soon. This new technology is part of the resort's efforts to boost local tourism and business.  AZ Family

CRIME NEWS

  • At 2:21 p.m. today, Flagstaff Police responded to Route 66 and Fourth St after witnesses reported an adult African American male in all black—snatched a woman's purse as she chased him.  Flagscanner
  • At 10:10 a.m., Flagstaff Police and Fire responded to a disturbance in Bushmaster Park on Alta Vista when two heavily intoxicated Native American men—one in black pants and a black long sleeve shirt—set an American flag on fire, yelled at bystanders, and one threatened people with a large stick before both were detained.  Flagscanner

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Coconino National Forest is partnering with Ecoculture to plant 40,000 native ponderosa pine trees over 200 acres near Schultz Pass Road next month—volunteers will join the event on August 9 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. to help restore the area affected by the 2022 fires.  KAFF
  • The American Red Cross has deployed crews to northern Arizona to help families impacted by the Dragon Bravo and White Sage wildfires near Grand Canyon National Park, offering crisis counseling and urgent care. Firefighters continue to contain the flames that have burned over 11,000 acres at the North Rim (with over 70 structures lost including the historic Grand Canyon Lodge) while the White Sage fire is burning over 50,000 acres.  AZ Family

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Coconino County leaders were appointed to federal committees at this year’s National Association of Counties Annual Conference, where more than 3,000 county representatives met to discuss issues like rural development, public lands, disaster response, and economic resilience—roles that will give local officials a stronger voice in national policy. Patrice Horstman, Sarah Benatar, and Lena Fowler will use their new positions to help guide policies that affect rural and tribal communities.  Flagscanner
  • Coconino County and federal agencies have partnered to create a backcountry alert system for the Grand Canyon—designed to warn visitors of flash flooding and debris flows during the monsoon season. The system will help manage safety risks as heavy thunderstorms bring rapid water surges.  Arizona Daily Sun
  • City officials in Flagstaff announced that from July 21 to 25, parts of the Flagstaff Urban Trail System including sections of the Karen Cooper Trail, Ponderosa Trails South and connectors in Boulder Pointe and Ponderosa Trails neighborhoods will be closed for surfacing repairs funded by Proposition 419. Residents should follow posted signage during the closures.  KAFF
