CRIME NEWS

  • A Flagstaff man who threatened two people with a machete earlier this year was sentenced to five years in prison by Coconino County Superior Court on July 14—his actions prompted a school lockdown.  Arizona Daily Sun
  • On July 15th, the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office stopped a vehicle near the Winona exit on Interstate 40 and, using a K9 unit, discovered 22 pounds of marijuana & two firearms, leading to the arrest of 20-year-old Ja’Tavian Carroll and 22-year-old Jamel Busby who were booked on charges of Transportation of Marijuana for Sale and Misconduct Involving Weapons with a $30,000 bond.  KAFF
  • A defendant in the Flagstaff shooting death of a 20 year old has requested a jury trial+ this request sets one of three upcoming homicide trials to be scheduled in the area over the next year.  Arizona Daily Sun

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Mayor Clarinda Vail of Tusayan said the Dragon Bravo Fire on the North Rim does not affect the South Rim, where hotels and campgrounds remain open for visitors. She added that some tourists are cancelling trips by mistake — confusing the fire's location and hurting local business.  AZ Family

  • Northern Arizona University president José Luis Cruz Rivera has been elected to serve a three-year term on the American Council on Education board starting in September — his role will help guide decisions at the national level.  Arizona Daily Sun

  • This week, Bill Wade writes a column on battling Dalmatian toadflax + his article explains effective methods to control the invasive plant + his guidance aims to protect local natural areas.  Arizona Daily Sun

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Flagstaff states it follows Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Title II of the ADA to make sure no one is excluded from city programs because of race, color, national origin, income, sex, age, limited English proficiency or disability. Anyone who believes their rights were violated must file a written complaint with the Civil Rights Office within 90 days of the incident.  City of Flagstaff

HEALTH NEWS

  • Coconino County health officials said the investigation of a prairie dog die-off did not find plague - they confirmed one hantavirus case and one rabies exposure on Tuesday afternoon. The county will continue to monitor the situation closely.  Arizona Daily Sun

  • The Coconino Master Gardener Association is set to host its annual tour of local gardens on Aug. 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Flagstaff, and one stop will feature a garden farmstand.  Arizona Daily Sun
