Good morning, Flagstaff. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 16th of July.

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Two wildfires are burning uncontrolled near the Grand Canyon's North Rim and have local business owners watching in concern. One lodge owner said his business remains safe, while another reported that road closures are hurting his hotel and store (both fires started by lightning and remain at zero containment).  AZ Family
  • Jacob Lake Inn, a family business started in 1923, is threatened by wildfires near the Grand Canyon as the White Sage Fire has burned nearly 52,000 acres since July 9 & forced an evacuation on July 10. The North Rim remains closed for the 2025 season and the future of the historic Inn is now uncertain.  AZ Family

EDUCATION NEWS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The National Park Service defended its handling of the Dragon Bravo Fire that burned 5,000 acres and destroyed the historic Grand Canyon Lodge and several cabins on July 11—12, saying safety rules and high winds stopped nighttime air drops. Gov. Katie Hobbs and lawmakers have called for an investigation while officials promise to review the fire management decisions for future improvements.  AZ Family
  • Coconino County was recognized as one of the top 10 digital counties for regions with up to 150,000 residents, marking its sixth consecutive year on the list.
