COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Flagstaff will host a free electric vehicle ride — a family event — on Saturday, May 31 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at NAU Campus Parking Lot P62A. DRIVE Electric Arizona, City of Flagstaff, and NAU will run the event — local drivers can test drive models like the Ford Mustang Mach-E and BMW i4 — and explain EV tax credits and charging options. - ➤ On Saturday, June 7 at 8 a.m., Coconino Community College and local fire departments will host a community recruitment event at 3000 N. Fourth Street in Flagstaff — community members will work through hands-on firefighting simulations such as pulling a fire hose, forcing open doors, performing a simulated rescue, practicing hands-only CPR and using the Jaws of Life, while also getting information on fire science programs and financial aid. The free event requires no registration and each station will take about an hour. KAFF

- ➤ On May 15, 74-year-old Dennis Smith of Olympia died on the North Kaibab Trail at the Grand Canyon while attempting the historic route from the South Rim to the North Rim—hikers are urged to prepare for extreme heat as park rangers warn inner canyon temperatures will reach 100°F by weekend. KAFF

- ➤ The Flagstaff Eagles lost by a score of 8 to 0 to Salpointe Catholic in the 4A state championship game after early errors allowed five runs in the first inning — Eagles senior pitcher Connor Iniguez kept the opposing team scoreless afterward.
