BUSINESS NEWS

  • Bookmans on Riordan Road closed today as employees struck over wage cuts, reduced hours, and sudden layoffs, saying management including CEO Bob Oldfather has not listened to their demands. Unionized workers, many with long service records, said they will return to work tomorrow and handed out fliers+ asking locals to support their fight for fair pay.  KAFF

CRIME NEWS

  • Flagstaff police arrested 16 individuals for alleged drug trafficking in an operation led by the METRO Task Force — a unit established in 1987 to target drug trafficking and gang activity.  Arizona Daily Sun
  • Flagstaff police arrested a man on May 15 on charges of reckless burning after he ignited a small fire—investigators believe he may have been involved in further wildland fire activity.  Arizona Daily Sun

CULTURE NEWS

  • The historic May Hicks Curtis House, built in 1911 and once home to the woman who sewed Arizona’s first state flag at 23, is moving from the Southside neighborhood—details on its new location have not yet been released.  Arizona Daily Sun

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city will close one lane in each direction on US Highway 89 from N Cummings St to near N Snowflake Dr and E Trails End Dr on May 19 and May 20 between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. The work will seal road cracks+ similar projects are underway in Crestview, Presidio, County Club Dr and Huntington Dr to improve road safety.  Flagscanner
