- ➤ Flagstaff will host a community meeting at the Aquaplex on May 29th (at 1702 N Fourth Street) to gather public input on plans for the Montalvo STEM Education Community Center. City staff, building representatives and design professionals (involved in the design process) will answer questions and use feedback to guide future planning. KAFF
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Flagstaff Police responded this morning to the Museum Club on E Route 66 after a dead body was found among the vegetation behind the business—detectives are investigating the scene. Flagscanner
- ➤ Raymond Glover Jr. was arrested for reckless burning after a small wildland fire burned near the I-17 northbound off-ramp on JW Powell Boulevard on May 15 at 11:20 a.m., with witnesses reporting he admitted starting the fire before claiming it was a joke driven by alcohol use, and he is linked to another fire near the I-17 southbound off-ramp on the same day at 4:00 a.m. and an incident behind the Red Lobster on May 14 at 9:00 p.m.—police warn residents of extreme fire dangers in dry, windy conditions. - ➤ Flagstaff police arrested Raymond Glover Jr. on Thursday for alleged reckless burning after witnesses reported he started three small wildland fires near I-17 off-ramps and behind Red Lobster (he later said his comment was a joke after drinking) and he remains in custody (facing charges for the incidents). - ➤ FUSD will conduct an FHS evaluation for the Marshall Elementary site at 850 N. Bonito St. — the district has not planned a new use for the location after the school moves. Arizona Daily Sun
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Two prescribed burns are scheduled to take place in the Flagstaff Ranger District of Coconino National Forest from May 20 to 23 to reduce wildfire risks in designated areas. The West Fork Crater Sinks burn will treat 1,795 acres and may cause localized smoke near Highway 89A — while the Bar-Mint East burn will cover 4,876 acres and could produce visible smoke near Mormon Lake Village — with changes possible if weather or other conditions do not meet criteria. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ US Highway 89 will have lane closures on May 19 and May 20 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. for crack sealing work between N Cummings St and the city limit near N Snowflake Dr and E Trails End Dr — work is part of the annual Road Repair and Street Safety Program — with related projects underway in Crestview, Presidio neighborhoods, County Club Dr and Huntington Dr. City of Flagstaff
- ➤ US Highway 89 will have lane closures on May 19 and May 20 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. between N Cummings St and the city limit near N Snowflake Dr. and E Trails End Dr.—the work will seal cracks in the road as part of the Road Repair and Street Safety Program while projects continue in other Flagstaff neighborhoods. - ➤ The Coconino National Forest proposed fee increases at some recreation sites to help maintain popular areas — the fee hike may also fund additional seasonal recreation staff. Arizona Daily Sun
