EDUCATION NEWS

  • Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona donated $200,000 to support education programs in northern Arizona by giving $100,000 for free STEAM summer camps that will serve over 400 middle school students and $100,000 to NAU to launch a new Global BSN format and provide scholarships for 10 psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner students; the funding aims to address local shortages of healthcare workers—continuing a series of investments since 2020.  KAFF
  • BASIS Flagstaff students presented their senior projects this year — 15 students, nearly half of the graduating Class of 2025, completed their work.  Arizona Daily Sun

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The City of Flagstaff is placing roll-off dumpsters that accept only pine needles in additional neighborhoods, with Rock Ridge Estates, Ridge Crest, and Anasazi Ridge scheduled for May 16—May 23, Lynwood and Cheshire for June 2—June 9, Country Club Estates for June 16—June 23, and Boulder Point for June 30—July 7. Residents are advised to dispose only of pine needles in these dumpsters and to report any illegal dumping to the Fire Department at 928-326-4419.  City of Flagstaff
  • The Coconino National Forest said Tuesday it allowed a lightning-caused fire to burn under controlled conditions near Clint's Well for fuel reduction — smoke was expected to affect the Mogollon Rim ranger district. Officials are monitoring the burn to manage potential impacts on nearby areas.  Arizona Daily Sun

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Arizona House representatives signed H-B 2179 into law yesterday to limit marijuana marketing to minors by banning sellers and manufacturers from using popular branding (such as cartoon or food designs). The law, sponsored by State Representative Selina Bliss, will impose significant penalties on violators to protect youth safety.  KAFF
  • ADOT announced that work will begin this week on a wildlife overpass project on I-17 12 miles south of Flagstaff (valued at $15.8 million) as crews install temporary concrete barrier walls and narrow lanes to one in each direction (mileposts 326-328). The project, partnered with the Arizona Game and Fish Department, aims to reduce wildlife crashes and is scheduled for completion by Fall.  KAFF

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • The Barefoot Trail near Flagstaff opens today for its second season, letting visitors walk barefoot on a mile-long trail with new segments (bridges and swings) that deepen their connection to nature. Booking requests for large group events are already coming in and the season will run from May to October.  AZ Family
