EDUCATION NEWS

  • FUSD approved an agreement with NAU in which it will buy land from NAU south of Kinsey Elementary’s current site on Lone Tree Road — NAU is attempting to purchase the current school site from FUSD.  Arizona Daily Sun
  • Today, the Flagstaff Unified School District board approved signing assurance forms to meet state and federal education department requests for funding—ensuring the district meets established federal requirements.  Arizona Daily Sun

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, Elden Fire Lookout reported a new fire starting near Bow and Arrow Trail at Harold Ranch at 11:35 a.m. and police noted at least one acre burning south of Interstate 40 near JW Powell at 11:44 a.m.—by 11:58 p.m., Flagstaff Fire Department and USFS said the Heart Fire had grown to roughly 1.5 acres with low spread potential.  Flagscanner
  • The Coconino National Forest is conducting five prescribed burns as the first began on April 28 and the last will continue until May 3 to help manage vegetation and reduce wildfire risks.  Arizona Daily Sun

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Coconino supervisors discussed options for a new Bookmobile—citing differences in price and expected changes in service methods. They will review these factors carefully as they decide the next steps.  Arizona Daily Sun
  • Flagstaff received notice from the EPA that it terminated the Regional Resilience Project grant because it no longer meets agency priorities—this decision immediately cut funding for three community hubs, including four jobs and emergency response kits, and city officials have filed an appeal while watching for further federal updates.  City of Flagstaff
  • The City of Flagstaff Sustainability Office will host a Fix-It Clinic on Saturday, May 3, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Joe C. Montoya Community and Senior Center.  Arizona Daily Sun
