CULTURE NEWS

  • The Museum of Northern Arizona announced its list of student artists for the Namingha Institute program set for later this year. Selections will be featured at upcoming museum events to highlight local arts innovation.  Arizona Daily Sun
  • Flagstaff’s Route 66 celebration is slated for June 6 near Heritage Square — offering family activities, music, car show, and live mural painting that honor the area’s nostalgic past and Native heritage.  AZ Family
  • Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff honors Route 66’s science legacy with exhibits featuring Percival Lowell’s 1911 car and stories of historic discoveries from Pluto—linking past astronaut training with NASA’s plans for a moon return. Astronauts trained here in the past and will train again as crewed lunar missions are set to launch.  AZ Family

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Coconino County officials outlined new wildfire season preparations after an abnormally dry, warm winter, including enhanced emergency plans and community alerts scheduled to launch as fire risks increase.  Arizona Daily Sun

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • APS cut power to 6,000 customers on Wednesday after forecast winds did not reach 70 mph, causing disruptions for local businesses like Timberline Tavern (which spent $1,500 on a generator) before power was restored by 6:45 p.m.  AZ Family
  • Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said during a Senate hearing that letting the Dragon Bravo Fire burn in parts of the canyon last summer led to high damage. He explained that a new suppression strategy (a shift in fire management) may help protect historic sites going forward.  AZ Family
  • The city will start its annual Road Repair and Street Safety Project on April 27 and will repair roads through fall as work focuses on improving conditions for motorists, pedestrians (and cyclists) across Flagstaff. Residents should plan ahead for intermittent traffic delays in active work zones.  Flagscanner
  • The Arizona Department of Public Safety will begin a bridge improvement project on Sunday, April 26 on southbound I-17 near the Sedona turnoff, and lane restrictions will stay until work finishes in late summer. Drivers are advised to slow down as the speed limit drops to 45 mph and a break check area sets for semi trucks at milepost 312.  KAFF
