Good morning, Flagstaff. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 8th of April.

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Flagstaff Sustainability Office will host the annual Earth Day celebration on April 19 at Bushmaster Park — inviting community members to join the event — as the city promotes environmental awareness.  Arizona Daily Sun
  • Coconino National Forest will conduct prescribed burns east and northeast of Flagstaff, but will halt ignitions and postpone, change, or cancel project plans (if wind and weather conditions become unfavorable).  Arizona Daily Sun

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management announced today two timber sales — the Baker sale treated about 1,000 acres near Happy Jack starting in May 2022 and the Poco Pino sale treated 718 acres east of Pine starting in January 2024. Salt River Project funded the projects as part of the Four Forest Restoration Initiative — aimed at reducing wildfire risk and improving watershed health.  KAFF
  • ADOT said that a new wildlife overpass will start construction later this month on I-17 near Munds Park to help stop accidents caused by animals crossing — drivers should expect the highway to be narrowed to one lane each way during the build using a $15.8 million federal grant — and it is set to finish in fall.  KAFF
